What it is
Late French Immersion starts in Grade 6 for students who have completed Grade 5, usually age 10–11. No French is needed beforehand.
It runs at Douglas, Laura Secord and Trafalgar elementary schools.
Placement is by random draw.
A good fit if: Grade 5 students who love languages, or families who missed Early French Immersion.
How to register
- Apply at elemchoice.vsb.bc.ca during your child's Grade 5 year.
- The 2026 window was January 6 to February 3. The 2027 window hasn't been announced yet but is expected around the same time.
How to prepare
- Talk with your child about whether they'd enjoy an intensive language year.
- Check commute times to the three host schools.

Does my child need to speak French for Late French Immersion?
No. It's designed for students starting French in Grade 6.
When do I apply for Late French Immersion in Vancouver?
