What it is

The BC Summer Reading Club is a free literacy program run by public libraries across BC. It's BC's own program, separate from the TD Summer Reading Club used in other provinces.

Children set a daily reading goal, track it on a paper reading record or the online tracker, and collect stickers at their branch. After 49 days of reading they can celebrate with their library, often with a medal.

Listening to audiobooks and being read to count as reading. Each library runs the program a little differently and adds its own events.

A good fit if: Every child, including early and reluctant readers. A low-pressure way to keep reading over the summer.

How to register

  1. Parents sign up at their local public library branch. It doesn't go through school.
  2. For the online tracker, a parent creates the account first and then adds the child. Accounts are cleared each year.
  3. Start dates vary by library. In 2026, Surrey Libraries started June 17, and Burnaby Public Library handed out medals from August 22.

How to prepare

  • Get a library card for your child before summer.
  • Pick a realistic daily goal. Surrey Libraries suggests at least 15 minutes a day.
